In a move that is likely to lead to greater transparency and accountability of political parties, the Central Information Commission has held that copies of Income Tax Returns of the political parties and the Assessment Orders passed on them will henceforth be available to all citizens. The order was passed by Central Information Commissioner, Shri A. N. Tiwari, on April 29, 2008. The original application under the Right to Information Act on behalf of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
