ADR and NEW have analyzed the affidavits of 59 women MPs in Lok Sabha 2009. Given below is a summary analysis of the findings-
1. There are only 59 (11%) women MPs in Lok Sabha 2009 as compared to 484 men MPs (89%).
2 Out of these 59 women MPs there are pending criminal cases against 10 (17%) women MPs. When compared to men MPs, out of 484 men MPs there are pending criminal cases against 152 (31%) men MPs.
3. Out of these 10 women MPs with pending criminal cases, 5 are from INC, 4 are from BJP and 1 is from SHS. Out of the 152 men MPs with pending criminal cases 39 are from INC, 40 are from BJP, 6 are from BSP, 4 each are from AITC and NCP amongst others.
4. Out of 10 women MPs who have pending criminal cases against them, there are pending serious criminal cases against 2 women MPs. Both of these MPs are from INC. When compared to men MPs with pending criminal cases, out of 152 such men MPs, there are serious pending criminal cases against 74 (15%) men MPs.
5. Out of women MPS with pending criminal cases, there are pending serious criminal cases against 2. These include charges of attempt to murder, robbery and furnishing false information. Detailed breakdown is given at the end.
6. Out of 59 women MPs in Lok Sabha 2009, 40 (68%) are crorepati. Out of 484 men MPs, 275 (57%) are crorepatis.
7. A total of 41 women MPs out of 59 (69%) women MPs are graduate & above. Out of 484 men MPs, 370 (76%) are graduate or above.
