29 candidates with self declared pending criminal charges contesting bye election on November 07, 2009 in 7 states
Out of these 29 candidates, 8 candidates have declared rape, murder and attempt to murder charges against them (maximum from Uttar Pradesh)

Major Highlights-
1. Total number of Candidates with pending criminal charges=29
2. Out of these 29 candidates, 12 candidates have serious IPC charges pending against them.
3. There are 8 candidates with rape, murder & attempt to murder charges pending against them. Out of these 6 are from Uttar Pradesh and 1 from Kerala and 1 from West Bengal.
4. Maximum no. of candidates with pending criminal charges contesting elections are from Uttar Pradesh (19 out of 67, 28.35%). It is followed by Kerala where 5 out of 11 (45.45%) candidates have pending criminal charges against them.
5. INC has fielded 7 out of 25 (28%) candidates with pending criminal charges. It is followed by SP (5 out of 11, 45.45%), BJP (5 out of 28, 17.85%) and BSP (4 out of 12, 30.00%) with pending criminal charges.
6. Candidates with pending serious charges like murder, attempt to murder, theft etc party wise- BSP-4, SP-2, AITC-1, BJP-1, CPI(M)-1, All India Forward Block-1 and IND-2.
7. Out of 157 analyzed candidates 22 candidates are crorepatis. Maximum crorepatis are from SP (6 out of 12, 50.00%) followed by INC (5 out of 25, 20.00%), BSP (4 out of 12, 33.33%), BJP (4 out of 28, 14.28%) and AITC (1 out of 7, 22.22%).
8. The top three candidates with highest assets are Mr. Raj Babbar(Rs. 11.70 crore) INC candidate from Firozabad, Mr. Rajesh Pandey (Rs. 6.77 crore) BJP candidate from Padrauna (U.P.) and Dimple Yadav (Rs. 5.27 crore) SP candidate from Firozabad.
9. Maximum crorepati are contesting from Uttar Pradesh (16 out of 67, 23.88%) followed by Chhattisgarh (3 out of 15, 20.00%).
10. Maximum numbers of candidate with criminal back ground are contesting from Jhanshi (3), Uttar Pradesh and Alappuzha (3), Kerala.
