Few Highlights-

Highlights of Asset Comparison of 229 recontesting MPs (please see reports for full details)

1. The average individual asset increase of recontesting MPs in this list is 298% or 2.67 Cr

2. The maximum % increase in assets among the analysed MPs is 9137% for an MP from UP.

Highlights for All India phase 4 analysis :

1. Total no. of Candidates with Criminal Records = 164 (i.e. 12.60% of 1306 candidates)

2. Most of the major political parties have fielded candidates with criminal records, with top four parties being BSP (13), INC (12), BJP (10) and SP (7).

3. There are 159 charges of heinous nature on the candidates which includes, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, etc.

4. There are 78 candidates charged with heinous crimes. Out of these BSP has the maximum (9) candidates charged with these crimes, INC is next with 6, SP with 4 and BJP and CPM with 3 such candidates.

5. Most states have candidates with criminal background contesting elections- Uttar Pradesh is at the top with 50 candidates out of 314. (or 16%)

6. There are 24 Red Alert constituencies where 3 or more contesting candidates have criminal background. UP has 9 such constituencies followed by 4 each in Haryana and NCT of Delhi. Rajasthan has 3 and Bihar and Punjab 2 each.

7. 259 "Crorepatis" (20%) are contesting elections in phase 4. Congress has 49, followed by BSP with 39, BJP 36 and SP 18.

8. Percentage of contesting crorepatis has increased from 9% in 2004 to 20 % in 2009.

9. Among major parties, the average asset per candidate for BSP is 13 crores, INC 6 crores and BJP 2 crores.

10. 54.7% candidates have not furnished their PAN card details.

11. Number of women candidates is just 117 (9%) as compared to 1189 of men (91%).

12. About 42.60% of candidates are graduates & above.

Highlights for phase 1, 2, 3 and 4 Analysis-

1. Total no. of Candidates with Criminal Records = 1042 (i.e. 15.47% of candidates)

2. Most of the major political parties have fielded candidates with criminal records, with top four parties being INC (108), BJP (106), BSP (100) and SP (47).

3. There are 1295 charges of heinous nature on the candidates which includes, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, extortion, etc.

4. There are 463 candidates charged with heinous crimes. Out of these BJP &BSP each have 40 candidates charged with such crimes, INC is next with 39 and SP has 28 such candidates.

5. Most states have candidates with criminal background contesting elections- Jharkhand is at top with 51 or 29. 82% contesting candidates with criminal background. This is followed by Bihar with 177 such candidates or 27% of contesting candidates.

6. There are 175 Red Alert constituencies where 3 or more contesting candidates have criminal background. Bihar has 33 such constituencies followed by followed by Maharashtra and UP each with 27 such constituencies.

7. 1090 "Crorepatis" (%) are contesting elections in phase 1, 2, 3 and 4. INC has 244, BJP has 165, BSP has 134 and SP has 57 crorepati candidates.

8. Percentage of contesting crorepatis has increased from 9% in 2004 to 16.18% in 2009.

9. Among major parties, the average asset per candidate for INC is 5 crores, BSP is 3 crores and BJP and SP is 2 crores each.

10. 61.2% candidates have not furnished their PAN card details.

11. Number of women candidates is just 463 (7%).

12. About 43.9 % of candidates are graduate or above. Please see through the reports for full details.
