In 2008 Chhattisgarg Assembly elections, a total of 1066 candidates contested for 90 seats, representing 40 parties. Out of 40 parties, only 3 parties have been successful in sending one or more MLAs into the Vidhan Sabha. 37 parties that contested elections did not win a single seat.

Last year, several political leaders made statements on removing criminals from politics. In one such statement, on Oct 18th 08, BJP’s PM candidate and Opposition leader, Mr LK Advani made a public statement in Varanasi that BJP will not field any candidate with criminal background even if the prospective candidate was on a winning ticket. A few months before, Congress General Secretary Mr Rahul Gandhi had made a similar statement at the Congress conclave.

In the phase 2 of Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, 51 Assembly constituencies out of 90 are going to the polls on Nov 20, 2008. CGEW has looked into affidavits filed by 524 candidates contesting elections in phase 2. Several facts have come out from compiling this information which are of wider public interest.
