The Gujarat Election Watch GEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms ADR) in a letter to the state election commission have demanded that affidavits filed by candidates or the local body elections should be made public.

The GEW and ADR has in the letter have sta ed that affidavits of candidates contesting Uttar Pradesh panchayat elections and Maharashtra municipal body elections were readily available on their SEC's website. “We appeal to you to make candidates' affidavits contesting in Gujarat local body elections available on Gujarat SEC's website or wider dissemination and voters' awareness.Only then the voters will be able to make an informed choice,“ the letter stated. ADR has also demanded that like in the Parliamentary and state assembly elections, candidates should be asked to submit affidavits with nomination papers containing information about their criminal antecedents, assets and liabilities, and educational qualifications. And that scanned copies of these affidavits should be put up on the website.

The all-India SEC's conference held in 2003, the state commissions had unanimously resolved to implement disclosure rules in local body elections. ADR in its letter has pointed out that on June 28, 2011, Gujarat SEC had also issued an order to file affidavits but this has not been adhered to.
