New Delhi: The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has analysed 1,739 self sworn affidavits of 1,761 candidates contesting in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election. 121 Lok Sabha seats in 12 states across India are voting on April 17. 279 candidates (16 per cent) have declared criminal cases against them and 465 (27 per cent) of them are crorepati candidates. 173 candidates (10 per cent) have declared serious cases against them. The average asset of the candidates is Rs 8.14 crore.

In Karnataka 55 candidates have criminal records and 118 candidates are crorepatis. All 28 Lok Sabha seats in the state is voting on April 17.

In Maharashtra, 71 candidates have declared criminal records and 83 candidates are crorepatis. 19 Lok Sabha seats out of 48 are voting on April 17.

LS phase 5: Nilekani richest with Rs 7700 crore, poorest has Rs 150

In Karnataka 55 candidates have criminal records and 118 candidates are crorepatis.

Jammu and Kashmir and Manipur, where one Lok Sabha seat each is voting have no candidates with criminal records.

Candidates with criminal cases: Out of the 1,739 candidates analysed, 279 candidates (16 per cent) have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Candidates with serious criminal cases: 173 candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, rape, robbery etc.

Candidates with cases related to murder: 12 candidates have declared cases related to murder.

Candidates with cases related to attempt to murder: 27 candidates have declared cases of attempt to murder.

Candidates with cases related to crimes against women: 12 candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women. Dambale Rahul Dharma an Independent candidate from Pune constituency, Maharashtra has declared a case related to rape.

Party-wise candidates with criminal cases: 22 (22 per cent) out of 101 candidates from INC, 30 (29 per cent) out of 105 candidates from BJP, 16 (15 per cent) out of 108 candidates from AAP, 22 (19 per cent) out of 118 candidates fielded by BSP and 66 (10 per cent) out of 680 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise candidates with serious criminal cases: 7 (7 per cent) out of 101 candidates from INC, 14 (13 per cent) out of 105 candidates from BJP, 10 (9 per cent) out of 108 candidates from AAP, 13 (11 per cent) out of 118 candidates fielded by BSP and 48 (7 per cent) out of 680 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Red alert constituencies: 43 constituencies have at least 3 candidates with declared criminal cases. Beed constituency, Maharashtra has the highest number of contesting candidates i.e. 9 with criminal cases against them. (Red alert Constituencies are those which have 3 or more candidates with criminal cases contesting elections).

The BJP leader Gopinath Munde is contesting from Beed.

Party-wise crorepati candidates: 87 (86 per cent) out of 101 candidates in INC, 87 (83 per cent) out of 105 candidates in BJP, 46 (43 per cent) out of 108 candidates in AAP and 32 (27 per cent) out of 118 candidates in BSP and 66 (10 per cent) out of 680 Independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Average Assets: The average assets per candidate contesting in the fifth phase of elections is Rs 8.14 crore.

Party-wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 101 Congress candidates is Rs 89.89 crores, 105 BJP candidates have average assets of Rs 11.35 crores, 108 AAP candidates have average assets worth of Rs 3.48 crores and 118 BSP candidates have average assets of Rs 1.73 crore.

Party-wise asset rank: 84 (83 per cent) out of 101 INC candidates occupy the top three assets positions amongst all the contesting candidates in their respective constituencies. Similarly, 85 (81 per cent) out of 105 BJP candidates, 23 (19 per cent) out of 118 BSP candidates and 29 (27 per cent) out of 108 AAP candidates occupy the top three asset positions in their constituency.

High asset Candidates - 29 candidates have declared more than Rs 50 crore worth of assets. The top three candidates with highest assets are given below:

Nandan Nilekani: The Congress candidate from Bangalore South Nandan Nilekani is the richest candidate with declared assets worth Rs 7710 crore. His annual income shown in the affidavit is Rs 97 crore for the Financial Year (FY) 2012-13. He and his wife together have earned Rs 168 crore in the same year.

Anil Kumar Sharma: The JDU candidate from Jehanabad in Bihat, Anil Kumar Sharma, has declared assets worth Rs 849 crore.

R Prabhakar Reddy: The JDS candidate from Bangalore Rural, R Prabhakar Reddy, has assets worth Rs 224 Crore.

Candidates with zero assets: 14 candidates have declared their total assets as zero.

Low asset candidates: A total of 90 candidates have declared assets less than Rs 50,000 (excluding candidates who have declared zero assets).

Independent candidate from Satara in Maharashtra Kadam Sagar Uttamrao has assets worth just Rs 150!

Income tax

55 per cent candidates have declared income tax returns and 45 per cent have not declared it.

Education

51 per cent candidates are graduate and above and 45 per cent are 12th pass and below. 62 per cent candidates are in the age group of 25 - 50 years. 34 per cent candidates are in the age group of 51-70 years. 3 per cent candidates are in the age group of 71 and above and 1 per cent unknown.

93 per cent candidates are male and just 7 per cent are female.
