The winners of the 2023 Tripura state assembly elections secured victory by an average of 48% of total votes polled while in the 2018 elections, the winners had won by an average of 53% of total votes polled, the analysis of Tripura Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms revealed.

“In the 60-member assembly, only 23 contestants secured their victory with 50% of the polled votes but rest 37 won the seats with less than 50% of the total votes polled in their constituency. Seven out of 16 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above and 10 out of 21 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50% and above,” the report underlined.

Around 12 out of 16 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner-up with a clean background. Among these 12 winners, 6 have won with more than 10% margin of victory. Ranjit Debbarma (Tipra Motha) from Ramchandraghat (ST) constituency won with 43% margin of victory.

The 16 crorepati winners of 21 have won against a non-crorepati runner-up and among them, two won with more than 40% margin of victory. Among the 60 winners, 9 are women and among them three have won with more than 10% margin of victory. However, Swapna Debbarma (Tipra Motha) from Mandai Bazar (ST) constituency has won with the highest vote share of 66%.

Significantly, 1.36% of the total polled votes in the election went to NOTA.
