Six percent candidates have severe criminal cases against them. One candidate, Martujuddin Choudhury, an independent candidate contesting from Bagbasa constituency has a murder case against him.

While 22 per cent candidates from BJP have criminal cases against them, 7 per cent from Congress, 4 per cent from CPIM, 22 per cent from Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) and 4 per cent from Trinamool Congress have criminal cases against them.

The report further confirms that 35 candidates out of the total 297 contesting elections are crorepatis. It reveals that average asset per candidate contesting assembly elections is ₹46.92 lakhs. While the average asset per candidate for Congress is ₹53.16 lakhs, that for the BJP is ₹1.35 crores.

Jishnu Devvarma, BJP candidate contesting from Charilam constituency has assets worth ₹11 crores.

Despite the central government urging the people to reveal their income tax details, 78 per cent candidates are yet to abide by it.
