Of the 57 newly-elected Rajya Sabha members, 23, around 40 per cent have declared criminal cases against them in their election affidavits, of which nine are from the BJP and four from the Congress. ADR-National Election Watch released its report on Thursday.

Six Rajya Sabha MPs from UP, four each from Maharashtra and Bihar

Of these, six Rajya Sabha MPs are from Uttar Pradesh, four each from Maharashtra and Bihar, three from Tamil Nadu, two from Telangana and one each from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Haryana. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch said the report is based on an analysis of self-appointed affidavits of all 57 MPs elected to the Rajya Sabha this month.

BJP’s nine

The report said that out of 57 MPs analysed, 23 MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves. As per reports, nine of the 22 newly elected Rajya Sabha MPs of the BJP have criminal cases against them.

Criminal cases against four Congress MPs

Four of the nine newly elected Congress MPs have declared criminal cases against them in their election affidavits. The report said that both the newly elected TRS MPs as well as two members elected to the Rajya Sabha from the RJD have declared criminal cases against them.

MPs with serious criminal cases

It is also said that one MP each from YSRCP, DMK, AIADMK, SP, SHS (Shiv Sena) and an independent have declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits. A total of 12 MPs have declared “serious criminal cases”.

Analyzing the movable and immovable assets of 57 newly-elected MPs, the report said 53 of them are crorepatis and placed TRS MP Bandi Partha Sardhi at the top of the list, who has a net worth of over Rs 1,500 crore.

In second place, former Congress leader Kapil Sibal, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate from Uttar Pradesh with the support of the Samajwadi Party, had a net worth of over Rs 608 crore.

The report has placed Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP)’s Vikramjit Singh Sahni at the third position with the net worth of the newly-elected Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab at more than Rs 498 crore. The report states that the average asset value of newly elected MPs for Rajya Sabha 2022 is Rs 154.27 crore.
