Kottayam: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the highest number of legislators with declared cases related to crime against women, a study has said.

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) study found that out of the 1,581 lawmakers with criminal cases, 51 had cases related to crime against women. Out of these MPs and MLAs, 14 of those involved in cases related to crime against women were from BJP. They are followed by the Shiv Sena (7 cases) and the All India Trinamool Congress (6 cases).

Political parties also did not shy away from giving tickets to those accused in crime against women. As many as 334 candidates with records of crime against women were given tickets to contest elections.

The BJP also leads in providing tickets to leaders with a record of crime against women. In the past five years, 48 candidates with declared cases of crime against women were given ticket by the BJP. The BSP took the second position followed by Congress with 36 and 27 cases respectively.

Among the states, Maharashtra has 12 legislators with crime record against women, followed by West Bengal with 11 and Odisha, 6.
