The 54 Tripura legislators who are re-contesting on Sunday reported an average assets growth of 47 per cent in the last five years.

The report published by the National Election Watch said the highest assets growth was registered by candidates who are contesting from the BJP.

Among those who gained assets, Biswabandhu Sen, who is the BJP candidate from Dharmanagar, tops the list.

He admitted in his affidavit to the Election Commission a 95 per cent increase in assets with a total gain of Rs 2.15 crore since he last became MLA. Sen was a Congress candidate in the 2013 Assembly polls.

BJP candidate Sudip Roy Barman, contesting from Agartala, is second on the list. He gained 76 per cent increase in assets with a net amount of Rs 1.57 crore increase above his assets when he went to the polls as a Congress candidate last time.

BJP candidate from Radhakishorepur constituency Pranajit Singha Roy is third on the list with a 34 per cent increase in assets.

The report says CPM candidates Bijoy Laxmi Singha from Kamalpur, Narayan Chandra Choudhury from Kamalasagar and Monoranjan Debbarma from Mandaibazaar seats registered reduced assets compared to the last election.

Bijoy Laxmi, widow of former minister Bimal Singha, had 68 per cent decrease in assets, Choudhury had 45 per cent decrease while Monoranjan Debbarma experienced 43 per cent drop in his admitted assets in the last five years.

According to the NGO, 22 candidates contesting the polls have got criminal charges pending against them.
