The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Maharashtra Election Watch analysed the affidavits declared by 245 of the 252 corporators who contested the election from the 64 multi-member wards of the three municipal corporations and according to the analysis 107 new coporators in Panvel, Bhiwandi-Nizampur and Malegaon Municipal coporations have criminal records. 45 of them have committed serious offences. The elections were held on May 24.
62 candidates who won are facing criminal cases against them and more 45 candidates are facing serious charges such as murder or attempt to murder and cheating.
The Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation has most number of criminal offenders. 27 of the 88 corporators are facing criminal charges. The Bhiwandi-Nizampur civic body also leads in the number of winners involved in serious offences.
Across the three civic bodies there are 119 crorepatis. The winner with the highest declared assets (Rs 95 crore) is Paresh Ram Thakur of the BJP, who won from Ward 19A of the Panvel Municipal Corporation.
