Guwahati: More than half the MLAs who will soon take their seats in the 126-member state assembly are crorepatis.

Compared to 47, or 37%, lawmakers of the outgoing state assembly, 72 MLAs of the new assembly (57%) are crorepatis.

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) might be the junior partner in its alliance with BJP, but the party's MLA from Naharkatia, Naren Sonowal, is second to none when it comes to wealth.

"Sonowal has assets worth Rs 33,94,60,623. He is the richest among those who made it to the state assembly this time," said a report compiled by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Assam Election Watch (AEW).

Sonowal is followed by BJP's Narayan Deka (Barkhetry) and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Abdur Rahim Ajmal (Jamunamukh) who have total assets worth Rs 17 crore and Rs 13 crore, respectively.

"The CM candidate, Sarbananda Sonowal , is 46th on the list with total assets worth Rs 1,85,44,919. Two-time CM Prafulla Mahanta is the eighth richest MLA in the house with property worth over Rs 8 crore. Outgoing CM Tarun Gogoi holds the 15th position with assets worth around Rs 5 crore," Tasaduk Ariful Hussain, coordinator of AEW, said.

At least 34 of 60 BJP MLAs, 16 of 26 Congress legislators, 10 of 14 AGP MLAs, seven of 12 BPF MLAs and five out of 13 AIUDF MLAs are crorepatis.
