Prof Jagdeep S. Chhokar, one of the founding members of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), passed away on Friday, September 12, 2025, in New Delhi at the age of 81. A respected academic, lawyer, engineer, conservationist, and civic activist, Prof Chhokar leaves behind a lasting legacy of integrity, courage, and commitment to democratic governance.

Known for his relentless advocacy for transparency and accountability in Indian politics, Prof Chhokar was regarded as much more than an activist. He was a generous mentor, incisive thinker, and warm friend. Colleagues and students remember him as fearless, principled, and a strong voice for public accountability.

Prof Chhokar’s work with ADR significantly reshaped India’s approach to elections and governance reforms. His vision of clean politics and transparency continues to inspire movements for a more vibrant democracy. In his final act of service, he donated his body to Lady Hardinge Medical College for medical research.

He will be deeply missed by his family, colleagues, students, and countless citizens who benefitted from his tireless efforts. ADR has expressed its heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs Kiran Chhokar, and the bereaved family, affirming that his work will continue to guide their mission of strengthening democratic institutions.

“Prof Chhokar’s example will inspire generations to come. His contributions will forever remain a cornerstone of ADR’s pursuit of democratic reforms,” the organization said in a statement.
