At least 39% candidates in the fray for third phase of polling in UP are crorepatis with their average assets pegged at Rs 2. 82 crore. Also, 135 of 623 (22%) candidates have criminal antecedents with 103 of them booked for grave crimes like murder and rape.

A detailed analysis by election watchdog, Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), states that 245 of 623 candidates fielded by political parties in 59 constituencies, have declared themselves crorepatis.

Among principal parties, SP has 52 candidates with assets of more than Rs 1crore, while BJP has 48 nominees, BSP 46, Congress 29 and AAP has fielded 18 crorepatis. With major political parties fielding wealthy candidates, money power is key in the polls, the report states.

In the tainted league, 30 of 58 candidates from Samajwadi Party and 25 of 55 candidates from BJP have declared criminal cases in their affidavits. “Also, 23 of 59 candidates from BSP, 20 of 56 Congress candidates and 11of 49 candidates from AAP have criminal cases against them,” the report states. The ADR report also stated that average assets of SP candidate was pegged at Rs 9.19 crore, Rs 6.74 crore for BJP, Rs 4.60 crore for Congress, Rs 4.28 crore for BSP and Rs 1.31 crore for Aam Aadmi Party.
