PUDUCHERRY: Out of the 30 MLAs in Puducherry, six, including two ministers, have been elected to power with criminal cases pending against them. According to an analysis by the Pondicherry Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms on the basis of affidavits, of these six MLAs, two are from INC, one each from AIADMK and MDMK and two independents.

The six MLAs are: PWD minister MOHF Shajahan, revenue minister Malladi Krishna Rao, MDMK MLA R Siva, AIADMK MLA Om Sakthi Segar and independent MLAs A Marimuthu and J Narayanasamy.

A total of eight criminal cases, including six charges of heinous nature, are pending against them. The charges include attempt to murder, causing hurt, kidnapping and extortion, said A Victor Joseph Raj, coordinator, Puducherry Election Watch.

In fact, an analysis of the nine candidates who contested in the 2006 elections (with serious criminal cases) showed that five won and the remaining four lost the elections. As per the affidavits filed, there are nine crorepati MLAs which include four from DMK, three from INC and one each from AIADMK and PMC. PWD minister MOHF Shajahan is the wealthiest followed by MAS Subramanian (DMK) and Om Sakthi Segar (AIADMK).
