On Tuesday, former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala was sentenced to prison for his role in ateacher recruitment scam. He isn't the first CM to be punished for graft. Political parties have consistently fielded tainted candidates, despite awareness campaigns against it. An Association for Democratic Reformsanalysis shows that out of the 4,835 MPs and MLAs who filed self-declared affidavits with the EC at the time of contesting elections in the past five years, 1,448 (31%) had criminal cases against them.
