In Chennai Of the 679 candidates in the fray for the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, a total of 240 are crorepatis while only around 25 have no assets or less than Rs 15,000, a National Election Watch (NEW) analysis has said.

The analysis is part of the initiative by Association for Democratic Reforms and NEW to inform the voters about leaders who have amassed wealth after coming to public life.

The Congress candidate for Nanguneri constituency and businessman H Vasanthakumar is the richest candidate with declared assets worth Rs 133 crore.

AIADMK candidate S Duraisamy, who is taking on deputy chief minister M K Stalin from Kolathur constituency, owns assets worth Rs 64 crores.

The AIADMK has fielded highest number of crorepatis – 75, while DMK, Congress and BJP have fielded 73, 33 and 25 respectively.

‘We are (DMK) family’

TN Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s family is going all out to support the party patriarch. Sons, daughters, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, everyone in the Karunanidhi family is out wooing voters.

The latest to hit the campaign trail is Kayalvizhi, daughter of union minister M K Alagiri. The father-daughter duo is wooing voters in southern districts while Stalin is on a whirlwind tour campaigning for the alliance candidates.

Stalin’s wife Shantha, CM’s daughter Kanimozhi, and his grandnephews – Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanidhi Maran - are also wooing voters across the state.

Karunanidhi youngest son Tamilarasu and another daughter Selvi were also a part of the DMK family campaign trail.
