Corporate houses like Torrent Group and Cadila Healthcare Ltd were among the top donors from Gujarat who made political donations to the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively, months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

According to a report titled: ‘Analysis of Donations received by National Parties – 2013-14′, released by National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms on Wednesday, showed that the corporates and individuals from Gujarat were the third largest contributors — after Delhi and Maharashtra — to political parties during the last fiscal.

Companies of the Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group is among the top 15 donors to the Congress party during the year 2013-14. Both group companies, Torrent Pharmaceuticals and Torrent Power Ltd, donated a crore each to the party in March 2014.

Similarly, Pankaj Patel promoted Cadila Healthcare Ltd donated one crore to National Congress Party (NCP), who had fought the Lok Sabha elections as an ally of the Congress lead UPA coalition.

The Sikkim unit of Zydus Wellness Ltd which is a sister company of the Cadila Healthcare in the consumer products business also contributed Rs 1 crore to the NCP during the same year. Both Cadila Healthcare and Zydus Wellness features in the list of top-15 donors to NCP in the ADR report.  The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had declared a maximum amount of Rs 83.19 crore from 2941 donations in 2012-13, is the only national party which has “defaulted on its submission of donations report by more than a month” to the Election Commission of India (ECI). All other major parties had submitted their respecitve reports of donations in September 2014, the ADR report stated.
