As many as nine sitting MPs face murder cases, with five of them belonging to the BJP.

According to a report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), which analysed self-sworn affidavits of 514 sitting Lok Sabha MPs, a concerning 44 per cent, or 225 MPs, have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Among the MPs analysed, 5 percent are billionaires, possessing assets exceeding Rs 100 crore. Of those with criminal charges, 29 percent face serious criminal cases, including allegations of murder, attempt to murder, promoting communal disharmony, kidnapping, and crimes against women.

As many as nine sitting MPs face murder cases, with five of them belonging to the BJP. Additionally, 28 MPs have declared cases related to attempt to murder, predominantly from the BJP, with 16 MPs facing charges related to crimes against women, including three allegations of rape.

In terms of financial status, the BJP and the Congress have the highest number of billionaire MPs, although other parties also show significant representation.

States such as Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh have more than 50 percent of their MPs facing criminal charges.

Disparities in wealth among MPs are evident, with some possessing assets worth hundreds of crores while others have minimal assets. Notably, the top three MPs with the highest declared assets are Nakul Nath (Congress), D K Suresh (Congress), and Kanumuru Raghu Rama Krishna Raju (Independent), with assets totaling hundreds of crores.

The report also highlights the educational background, age, and gender distribution among sitting MPs, revealing that 73 percent have graduate or higher educational qualifications, while only 15 percent are women.
