There has been a tremendous loss in the financial year 2020-21 in the donations of national political parties. Compared to 2019-20, there was a total decrease of Rs 420 crore in donations received by national parties in the last financial year. If both the years are compared, then where national parties have received 41.49 percent less donations in 2020-21 as compared to 2019-20 in the country.
How much did BJP donate?
The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), a group analyzing donations from political parties, said in a report released on Thursday that in 2020-21, there was a decline of 39.23 percent in the contribution of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The party received Rs 477.54 crore as donation in 2020-21 as against Rs 758.77 crore in 2019-20. Earlier, the donation received by the party had increased by 5.88 percent in 2019-20 as compared to 2018-19.
How much does Congress donate compared to BJP?
On the other hand, there was a decline of 46.39 percent in the donations received by the Congress. The party got Rs 139.016 crore in 2019-20, which fell to Rs 74.524 crore in 2020-21. According to the report, between 2018-19 and 2019-20, Congress’ donations fell by 6.44 percent. A major reason for the decline in donations to national parties is believed to be the coronavirus pandemic, which came a few days before the start of the financial year 2020-21. Actually, lockdown was imposed across the country only after the first wave.
National parties get maximum donations from Delhi
National parties received a total donation of over Rs 246 crore from Delhi, Rs 71.68 crore from Maharashtra and over Rs 47 crore from Gujarat. BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and National People’s Party are the eight recognized national parties of the country.
80 percent of political parties’ donations come from the corporate and business sectors.
The corporate and business sector donated Rs 480.655 crore to national parties, which was more than 80 per cent of the total donations. On the other hand, 2,258 individual donors contributed a total of Rs 111.65 crore or 18.80 percent of the total donations to these parties during the financial year 2020-21.
BJP has the highest donation from the corporate sector
The BJP received over 1,100 donations from the corporate and business sectors (Rs 416.794 crore), while 1,071 individual donors gave Rs 60.37 crore to the party during the financial year 2020-21. During the financial year 2020-21, Congress received a total of Rs 35.89 crore through 146 donations from the corporate sector and Rs 38.634 crore through 931 individual donors.
