   National Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 63 out 64 candidates contesting for Rajya Sabha Elections to be held on 23rd March, 2018 for 58 seats in 16 states. One candidate namely Dhiraj Kumar Sahu (INC) contesting from Jharkhand has not been analysed as his affidavit was badly scanned.


Summary and Highlights

Criminal Background

 

  • Candidates with Criminal Cases:   16 (25%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.
  • Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases:   8(13%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves such as kidnapping, attempt to murder, robbery etc.

Financial Background

 

  • Crorepati Candidates: Out of the 63 candidates analysed, 55 (87%) are crorepatis. 
  • Party wise Crorepati Candidates: Among the major parties 26(90%) out of 29 candidates from BJP, 10(91%) out of 11 candidates from INC, 3 (75%) out of 4 candidates from AITC, 3(100%) candidates from TRS, 2(100%) out of 2 candidates from JD(U) and 1 (100%) from  SP have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.
  • Average Assets: The average assets of 63 candidates analysed is Rs 122.13 crores.
