Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, Harsimrat Kaur, Supriya Sule figure among top 10
The average assets of 102 MPs elected in 2014, 2019 and again in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections have soared 110% over the past decade, an analysis of their self-sworn affidavits has shown.
The average assets of these 102 MPs fielded by various political parties in 2014 stood at Rs 15.76 crore. This rose to Rs 24.21 crore in 2019 and Rs 33.13 crore in 2024. The average asset growth for these MPs between 2014 and 2024 is Rs 17.36 crore (110%). The analysis based on the affidavits was published on Wednesday by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), an organisation working on political and electoral reforms.
Among the top 10 MPs with the highest asset growth, five belong to the BJP and one each to the YSRCP, Shiv Sena, NCP-SP, TMC and Shiromani Akali Dal. Hema Malini (BJP), Shatrughan Sinha (TMC), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Akali Dal) and Supriya Sule (NCP-SP) feature among the top 10.
The top three re-elected MPs with the highest asset increase (rupee-wise) are BJP’s Udayanraje Pratapsinhamaharaj Bhonsle from Satara (rise of Rs 162.51 crore—Rs 60.60 crore in 2014, Rs 223.12 crore in 2024); BJP’s Poonamben Maadam from Jamnagar (Rs 130.26 crore rise—Rs 17.43 crore in 2014, Rs 147.70 crore in 2024); and PV Midhun Reddy of YSRCP from Rajampet (Rs 124.25 crore rise—Rs 22.59 crore in 2014, Rs 146.85 crore in 2024).
Hema Malini is fourth on the list with a rise of Rs 100 crore in assets—from Rs 178 crore in 2014 to Rs 278 crore in 2024. BJP’s Rao Inderjit Singh from Gurgaon reported a rise of over Rs 96 crore in 10 years—up from Rs 25 crore in 2014 to Rs 121 crore in 2024. Akali MP Harsimrat’s assets rose by over Rs 90 crore from Rs 108 crore to Rs 198 crore; Shatrughan’s by over Rs 78 crore and Sule’s by Rs 52 crore.
In percentage terms, Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s son Shrikant saw the highest rise in average assets—14,851%—from Rs 9 lakh in 2014 to Rs 14 crore in 2024, followed by BJP’s Mukesh Rajput (Farrukhabad), whose assets rose from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 9 crore (a jump of 12,821%) and BJP’s Dharambir Singh (Bhiwani Mahendragarh), whose assets rose 8,021% from Rs 14 lakh in 2014 to Rs 11 crore in 2024.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s average assets grew 82% from over Rs 1 crore to over Rs 3 crore between 2014 and 2024. For Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the percentage rise was 311%—from over Rs 2 crore (2014) to Rs 10 crore (2024). Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi saw a 117% rise in assets from Rs 9 crore in 2014 to Rs 20 crore in 2024.
CR Paatil, Jal Shakti Minister, is the only re-elected MP to report a decline in assets in the last 10 years—from Rs 74 crore in 2014 to Rs 39 crore in 2024, a fall of 47%.
Among parties, the highest rise in average assets has been seen by regional outfits—JMM’s average assets rose from Rs 68.63 lakh in 2014 to over Rs 6 crore in 2024, a jump of 804%; YSRCP’s from Rs 14 crore to Rs 93 crore, an increase of 532%; and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM’s from Rs 4 crore in 2014 to Rs 23 crore in 2024, a jump of 488%.
Traditional parties BJP and Congress saw an asset jump of 108% and 135%, respectively, in a decade. The BJP’s assets grew from Rs 15 crore to Rs 32 crore, and the Congress’ from Rs 5 crore to Rs 12 crore. The Akali Dal’s average assets stood at Rs 108 crore in 2014 and Rs 198 crore in 2024, a rise of 84%.
