Bhopal: There is both good and bad news. Bad news is that at least 55 candidates with ‘declared’ criminal cases won against clean runners up contestants. The good news is that 50 contestants with clean background won against defeted candidates with declared criminal cases in the Assembly elections-2018.

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Madhya Pradesh Election Watch (MPEW) analysed the vote share of the 230 constituencies in the Assembly Elections. The report titled ‘Analysis of vote share, margin of victory and representativeness of winners’ was released on Monday.

Overall 55 out of 94 winners with declared criminal cases have won against runners up with clean background. Among these 55 winners, 10 have won with more than 20% margin. Among them, Imarti Devi of the Congress from Dabra constituency won with 38% margin of victory.

On the contrary, there are 50 winners with a clean background who have won against candidates with declared criminal cases. Out of the 50 winners, 8 have won with more than 20 % margin of victory. Another piece of good news that comes from the report is that there are 30 non-crorepati winners who have won against crorepati losers. Only one of them has won with more than 20%. Overall 35 out of 187 crorepati winners have won against non-crorepati runners up. Among these 35 winners, 5 winners have won with more than 20 % margin of victory. Contd.

The winners of assembly elections won by an average of 46.6 % of total votes polled. In 2013 elections, winners won by an average of 47.3% of total votes polled. According to an analysis of ADR report, only 83 candidates that amounts to 36% won with more than 50% of total votes polled in their constituency.

Out of 109 winners of BJP, 71 (65%) won with less than 50 % of total votes polled in their constituencies. 69(61%) out of 114 winners from the Congress won with less than 50% of votes. Similarly, all winners from the BSP (2) and SP (1) and all four independent candidates won with less than 50% of votes polled in their respective constituency.

Analysis by ADR reveals that 42(45%) out of 94 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50% and above also 74(40%) out of 187 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50% and above. Analysing representativeness of winners the figures show that all the winners won with an average of 35.3% of the total registered voters. This implies that the winners represents on an average 35.3% of the total electorate. In the Madhya Pradesh State Assembly Elections, 2013 won by an average of 34.3% of the total registered voters.

Out of 109 winners of BJP, 78(71%) have won less than 40% of votes of the total registered voters in the constituency. 71(62%) out of 114 winners from Congress; all (2) winners from BSP and SP (1) and all 4 independent winners have bagged less than 40 % of votes of the total registered voters in the constituency.
