Tripura Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all (297) candidates from the Tripura 2018 Assembly Elections. The report says that 22% of BJP candidates have criminal background while Congress on second with 7% criminal background candidate.

Out of the 297 candidates analysed, 22(7%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves from which 17 (6%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

1 candidate namely Martujuddin Choudhury, an Independent candidate contesting from Bagbassa constituency has declared case related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302) against himself.

6 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-307) against them.

If we talk about party wise cases, then 11(22%) out of 51 candidates from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), 4 (7%) out of 59 candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), 2(4%) out of 57 candidates from Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)), 2(22%) out of 9 candidates from Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) and 1(4%) out of  24 candidates from AITC  have declared criminal cases against them in their affidavits.

While  9(18%) out of 51 candidates from Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), 3 (5%) out of 59 candidates from Indian National Congress (INC), 2(22%) out of 9 candidates from Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) , 1(4%)  out of 24 candidates from  All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and 1(4%) out of 25 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases including murder, attempt to murder, Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means etc. against them in their affidavits.

 

When it comes to wealth, BJP has more crorepaties than INC. The share of wealth amongst the candidates contesting in assembly elections of Tripura is as follows:

Out of the 297 candidates analysed, 35 (12%) are crorepatis.

18 (35%) out of 51 candidates from BJP9 (15%) out of 59 candidates from INC, 4(7%) out of 57 candidates from CPI (M), 2 (13%) out of 15 candidates from INPT, 1(11%) out of 9 candidates from IPFT and 1 (4%) out of 24 candidates from AITC have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

The average of assets per candidate contesting in the Tripura Assembly Elections 2017 is Rs 46.92 Lakhs.

Among the major parties, the average assets per candidate for 59 INC candidates is Rs 53.16 lakhs, 57 CPI (M) candidates have average assets of Rs 39.91 lakhs, 51 BJP candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.35 crores, 24 AITC candidates have average assets worth Rs 9.93 lakhs, 15 INPT candidates have average assets worth Rs 36.44 lakhs, 9 IPFT candidates have average assets worth Rs 23 lakhs and 25 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 7.25 lakhs.
