The BJP had received ₹1,294.14 crore contribution as electoral bonds, forming 54 per cent of the total income, in FY 2022-23.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has topped the income list of national parties for FY 2023-24, according to the latest to poll rights body ADR’s annual report. The report reveals striking details about the ruling party’s financials, showing an impressive 83 percent increase in its income in 2024, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The saffron party received ₹ 4,340 crore in FY 2023-24 as income from various sources compared to ₹2,360 crore it received in FY 2022-23, as per the BJP’s annual audit report published by the Election Commission of India on its website. The report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) stated that the amount made up 74.57 percent of the total income of the six national parties during the period under review.

What The ADR Said

“The BJP declared a total income of Rs 4,340.473 crore during FY 2023-24 but spent only 50.96 per cent of it, amounting to Rs 2,211.69 crore. The total income of Congress was Rs 1,225.12 crore, while its expenditure for the year was Rs 1,025.25 crore or 83.69 per cent of its total income,” the report said.

A large portion of the income for national parties came from donations through electoral bonds. Among the sources of income for the ruling party, the voluntary contributions increased from ₹2,120.06 crore in 2022-2023 to ₹3,967.14 crore in FY 2023-2024.

The BJP received the highest amount, securing ₹1,685.63 crore, followed by the Congress with ₹828.36 crore, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with ₹10.15 crore.

Electoral Bond Contribution

BJP received ₹1,685.6 crore through electoral bonds in 2023-24. This is the highest-ever annual income or receipts from bonds declared by any party and about 38 per cent of BJP’s total income in FY 2023-24. The BJP had received ₹1,294.14 crore contribution as electoral bonds, forming 54 per cent of the total income, in FY 2022-23.

In FY 2023-24 electoral bonds comprised 43 per cent of total voluntary contributions to the BJP. In FY 2022-23 the share of Electoral Bonds in voluntary contributions to the BJP was 61 per cent.

In FY 2023-24, the BJP received ₹1,685.6 crore through electoral bonds, marking the highest-ever annual income from these bonds for any political party. This amount accounted for about 38% of the BJP’s total income for the year. In comparison, during FY 2022-23, the party received ₹1,294.14 crore in electoral bond contributions, making up 54% of its total income.

Electoral bonds in FY 2023-24 formed 43% of the BJP’s total voluntary contributions, while in FY 2022-23, they made up a larger share of 61%.

Congress Income

The annual income of Congress, the main opposition party, also saw a significant increase during the same period. The party’s income surged by approximately 170% in FY 2023-24 compared to the previous fiscal year.

Congress reported an income of ₹1,225 crore in FY 2023-24, a significant rise from ₹452.4 crore in the previous fiscal year, according to the party’s annual audit report. A major portion of this increase came from electoral bonds, with the party receiving ₹828.4 crore in FY 2023-24, compared to ₹171 crore in the previous year.
