The winners of the Tripura assembly elections held recently registered their victory with less than half of the polled votes, the analysis of Tripura Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms revealed.

The report said the winners of 2018 assembly elections had secured their victory with 53 per cent votes, which was reduced to 48 per cent in this election.

As many as six contestants won the seats with a margin of victory of less than 500 votes, while five won with more than 40 pc margin.

“In the 60-member assembly only 23 contestants secured their victory with 50pc of the polled votes but rest 37 won the seats with less than 50pc of the total votes polled in their constituency. 7 out of 16 winners with declared criminal cases have won with a vote share of 50pc and above and 10 out of 21 crorepati winners have won with a vote share of 50pc and above,” the report underlined.

Around 12 out of 16 winners with declared criminal cases have won against a runner-up with a clean background. Among these 12 winners, 6 winners have won with more than 10pc margin of victory. Ranjit Debbarma (Tipra Motha Party) from Ramchandraghat (ST) Constituency won with 43 pc margin of victory.

16 Crorepati Winners of 21 have won against non-crorepati runners up and among them, two won with more than 40 pc margin of victory. Among the 60 winners, 9 are women and among them, three have won with more than 10 pc margin of victory.

However, Swapna Debbarma (Tipra Motha Party) from Mandai Bazar (ST) Constituency has won with the highest vote share of 66 pc.

Out of total 25 re-elected winners, none have won with less than 30pc of vote share in their respective constituencies and three of them won with more than 50pc of vote share.

As many as 13 re-elected winners have registered their victory with less than 10pc margin of victory.

Significantly, NOTA secured 1.36 per cent of the total polled votes in the election.
