The Modi government has branded human rights groups like the ADR (Association of Democratic Reforms), which had been exposing cases of police atrocities and championing the democratic rights of citizens , as `Urban Naxals’. (Re: Counterview.net/2024/04). The garrulous Home Minister Amit Shah, in a speech at Bharuch during the last Lok Sabha election, on April 26, 2024, dubbed all Opposition parties as `Urban Naxals’.
Parallel to this outburst of rage against Opposition parties, and persecution of social activists, the Modi government has remained silent and inactive relating to cases of corruption involving corporate business house honchos. It is under Narendra Modi’s patronage that these honchos have thrived. Let us take a few cases. The Adani group, headed by Gautam Adani, who is politically close to the prime minister, has been named as an accused by the US SEC and Eastern district of New York, in connection with a $ 265 million bribery scam. The case is still going on. Let us examine the case of another business magnate close to Modi, Anil Ambani. Under pressures from rival corporate houses, the Enforcement Directorate was compelled to attach assets and buildings worth more than Rs. 1,452 crores, in the course of a money laundering investigation against Ambani’s Reliance Group.
Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ – model of a corrupt and criminal regime
As evident from the above cases, deep rooted corruption is fuelling India’s capitalist development under Modi’s rule, which is being peddled as `Viksit Bharat.’ This is compounded by criminal activities by the goons of the Hindu Sangh Parivar who target Muslims and Dalits. They are thriving under Modi’s patronage. Thus, corruption and crime have become inter connected tools of control and exploitation in present day India. Given this situation, Modi’s monthly speech `Maan Ki Baat’ should be retitled as `Bei-maan Ki Baat.’
The popular acceptance and approval of corruption and crime has been institutionalized through elections. The majority of our people prefer to elect corrupt politicians who buy them with money, or they bend under pressures from criminal candidates who threaten them with dire consequences if they don’t vote for them. As a result, we face this picture in our legislatures : 31% of our MPs and 29% of our MLAs in different state assemblies face criminal charges. The number has more than doubled from 14% in 2009.
If we turn our attention to the administrative machinery, which is required to ensure delivery of essential services to the citizens, we find that there has been a similar parallel erosion in the efficiency and honesty of the officials manning them. Till March 3, 2010, there were cases launched against eighty four IAS officers and thirty three IPS officers. (Re: statement by Prithviraj Chavan, Minister of state in the Government of India). Still later, on March 25, 2025, the news channel The 420 Web revealed the behind-the-scenes happenings in the IAS corridors by bringing out a report entitled India’s Most Corrupt IAS Officers: A List of 10 – Those Who Brought Disgrace to the Institutions. Following the exposure, the government was compelled to suspend some of them.
Few takers for Modi’s charitable offers amidst downward economic growth
Sometime ago, Narendra Modi floated with much fanfare a scheme entitled PMIS (PM Internship Scheme) aimed at training one crore young people over the next five years. What has been the response ? There has been a low acceptance rate and significant drop out, according to data tabled in the Lok Sabha by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs on December 1. This indicates an abysmal failure of trust in the PM’s much-propagated schemes, which are dismissed by the youth as ineffective and idle talks.
As for the Modi government’s tall claims about the rise of GDP figure of 8.2 per cent for the second quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year, and the IIP (Index of Industrial Production) standing at an annual four per cent , the IMF (International Monetary Fund) has raised questions regarding the reliability and accuracy of the economic data provided by the Modi government.
‘Vishva Guru,’ or ‘Vishva Kreetadash’ ?
For all his tall claims about India’s being the Vishva Guru (Master of the World), in terms of stark reality, India under Modi has descended to the status of a Vishva Kreetadash (Slave of the World), serving the interests of the two superpowers, US and Russia, as well as Israel by supplying our manpower to help that state to continue its war against Palestine. At international forums, he has become an object of ridicule and disgust by his habit of hugging diplomats, who resent such physically intimate gestures.
How long will our people continue to be buoyed up on the one hand, by our media’s propaganda of Modi’s so-called successful foreign policy, while on the other hand, back home remaining un-employed, suffering from physical ailments without medical care, being victims of lynching if they happen to be Muslims or Dalits ?
