Puducherry, May 11: The elections in Puducherry will witness a total of 68 candidates with a criminal background contesting the elections. The 343 self-sworn affidavits analysed 68 candidates have pending criminal cases while 30 have serious charges against them. 

The election will also witness 96 crorepati candidates contesting the polls. Puducherry Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 343 out of the 344 candidates who are contesting in the Puducherry Assembly Elections to be held on 16th May 2016.

Criminal Background Candidates with Criminal Cases: Out of the 343 candidates, 68 (20%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 30 (9%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, theft, crimes against women etc.

Candidates with cases related to murder: 1 candidate namely R.K.R.Anantharaman of INC from Manavely constituency has declared 1 charge related to Murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302).

Candidates with cases related to Attempt to Murder: 5 candidates have declared charges related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-307).

Candidates with cases related to Crimes against Women: 1 candidate namely P. Mathiazhagan of CPI from constituency Nendungadu has declared 1 charge related to assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (Indian Penal Code Section-354).

Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: 6 (29%) out of 21 candidates from INC, 8 (27%) out of 30 candidates from BJP, 6 (20%) out of 30 candidates from AIADMK, 8 (27%) out of 30 candidates fielded by All India N.R. Congress, 6 (25%) out of 24 candidates from PMK, 3 (12%) out of 26 from Naam Tamilar Katchi and 11 (12%) out of 96 Independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: 4 (19%) out of 21 candidates from INC, 1 (3%) out of 30 candidates from BJP, 2 (7%) out of 30 candidates from AIADMK, 4 (13%) out of 30 candidates fielded by All India N.R. Congress, 5 (21%) out of 24 candidates from PMK, 1 (4%) out of 26 from Naam Tamilar Katchi and 4 (4%) out of 96 Independent candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Financial background:

Out of the 343 candidates, 96 (28%) are crorepatis.

Party wise Crorepati Candidates: 18 (86%) out of 21 candidates from INC, 8 (27%) out of 30 candidates from BJP, 18 (60%) out of 30 candidates from AIADMK, 21 (70%) out of 30 candidates fielded by All India N.R. Congress, 5 (21%) out of 24 candidates from PMK and 16 (17%) out of 96 Independent candidates have declared assets worth Rs 1 Crore and above in their affidavits.

Average assets: The average of assets per candidate contesting in the Puducherry Assembly Elections is Rs 2.49 Crores.

Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 21 INC candidates is Rs 8.71 Crores, 30 BJP candidates have average assets of Rs 1.18 Crores, 30 AIADMK candidates have average assets worth Rs 5.60 Crores, 30 All India N.R. Congress candidates have average assets worth Rs 9.73 Crores, 24 PMK candidates have average assets worth Rs 63.54 Lakhs, average assets of 26 Naam Tamilar Katchi candidates is Rs 6.20 Lakhs, 9 DMK candidates have average assets of Rs 9.39 Crores and 96 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 63.20 Lakhs.
