The petition claims the move is arbitrary and risks disenfranchising millions of eligible voters

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) recent directive for a Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll in Bihar. The petition claims the move is arbitrary and risks disenfranchising millions of eligible voters.

ADR, a well-known electoral reform advocacy group, contends that the ECI’s order lacks proper justification and transparency. According to the organisation, the revision exercise could lead to the wrongful deletion of names from the voter rolls, especially among marginalised and vulnerable communities.

In its plea, ADR has asked the apex court to stay the implementation of the ECI’s order and to direct the Commission to provide a clear rationale for initiating the revision process in the state.

The Special Intensive Revision was announced amid growing political activity in Bihar and has raised concerns among civil society groups over the timing and intent behind the directive.

ADR has long campaigned for greater accountability and transparency in India’s electoral processes. The group has warned that large-scale deletions or errors in the voter list could undermine the democratic rights of citizens ahead of future elections in the state.
