Out of the 301 new BJP MPs, whose affidavits were examined, 265 (88 per cent) were found crorepati, while all 18 winners of its NDA partner Shiv Sena had assets exceeding Rs one crore.

Of the five richest MPs in the 17th Lok Sabha, the top three are from the Congress. The YSR Congress Party and the Telugu Desam Party grabbed the fourth and the fifth spot respectively. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms, a total of 475 MPs are crorepatis. The ADR put up the figures after analysing the affidavits of 539 of the 542 MPs. Out of the 301 new BJP MPs, whose affidavits were examined, 265 (88 per cent) were found to be crorepatis, while all 18 winners of its NDA partner Shiv Sena had assets exceeding Rs one crore. In the Congress, 43 out of its 51 MPs (totalling 96 per cent) were crorepatis. Similarly, 22 (96 per cent) out of the 23 Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MPs, 20 (91 per cent) out of 22 of the Trinamool Congress MPs and 19 (86 per cent) of the 22 YSR Congress Party MPs have declared assets exceeding Rs one crore.

Nakul Nath

According to the Association for Democratic Reforms(ADR), Congress' Nakul Nath, who contested his maiden election this year, is the richest MP with declared assets of over Rs 660 crore. Nakul, son of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, won the Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat in 2019, defeating Nathansaha Kawreti of the BJP by a margin of 37,356 votes. Nakul is the only Congress leader who survived the Modi wave in the state. The BJP won 28 of the 29 Parliamentary seats in the state while the Congress got only one.

H Vasanthakumar

H Vasanthkumar of the Congress is second in the list of the richest MPs in the 17th Lok Sabha with assets worth Rs 417 crore. Vasanthakumar outperformed Pon Radhakrishnan of the BJP by a margin of 2,59,933 votes in Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency. He is the vice-president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and also the chairman of the TNCC traders cell. The Congress leader is the founder and managing director of Tamil satellite channel Vasanth TV. He was elected to Tamil Nadu Assembly from Nanguneri constituency in 2006 and in 2016.

DK Suresh

DK Suresh is the only Congress leader from Karnataka who bucked the Modi wave in the 2019 general elections. Suresh emerged victorious over BJP's Ashwathnarayan Gowda in Bangalore Rural by a margin of 2,06,870 votes. He is at the third spot on the list of richest MPs with declared assets of Rs 338 crore. He won the byelection to the Bangalore Rural constituency in 2013 and retained the seat in 2014, when he had won by a margin of 2,31,480 votes.

Kanumuru Raghurama Krishna Raja

YSRCP's Kanumuru Raghurama Krishna Raja holds the fourth spot on the list of the richest MPs with assets worth Rs 325 crore. Raja defeated TDP's VV Siva Rama Raju in Andhra Pradesh's Narsapuram by a margin of 31,909 votes. Raja was with the BJP till 2018 and the same year he crossed over to the TDP, only to join the YSRCP in 2019. He is an industrialist from West Godavari district.

Jayadeva Galla

Jayadev Galla is the fifth richest MP in the 17th Lok Sabha with a declared asset of over Rs 305 crores. TDP's Galla registered a win over Modugula Venugopala Reddy of the YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh's Guntur by a thin margin of 4,205 votes. In 2014, Galla won the seat by a margin of 69,111 votes. He is an industrialist and owner of Amara Raja Batteries.
