At least 67 MLAs who are recontesting the Haryana Vidhan Sabha polls this year have witnessed an average increase of 156 per cent in their assets as compared to their poll affidavits filed in the 2009 Assembly polls. It comes to an average increase of Rs 11.41 crore. The analysis is based on compilation of poll affidavits of 1,343 candidates recently released by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

Despite being in the opposition, BJP MLAs (four candidates) recontesting this time show an average increase of 211 per cent in their assets, followed by INLD MLAs (19 candidates) with an average increase of 207 per cent and Congress MLAs (38 candidates) 185 per cent rise in their assets over the last five years.

Of the total 1,343 candidates contesting this time, there are 563 crorepatis (42 per cent) while the number was 380 (32 per cent) in 2009 polls.

At least 122 candidates have declared assets worth over Rs 10 crore, while nine candidates have declared assets above Rs 100 crore. These include Ravi Chauhan, contesting as independently from Ateli constituency (Rs 212 crore), Venod Sharma, HJCP candidate from Ambala city constituency (Rs 153 crore), Gopal Kanda, candidate of Haryana Lokhit Party from Sirsa constituency (Rs 114 crore), Savitri Jindal, Congress candidate from Hisar (Rs 113 crore), Vipul Goyal, BJP candidate from Faridabad (Rs 106 crore), Sukhbir Kataria, independent candidate from Gurgaon (Rs 104 crore) and Kailash Chand Bhagat, INLD candidate contesting from Kaithal constituency (Rs 100 crore).

The analysis further reveals that 62 (69%) out of 90 Congress candidates occupy the top three highest assets positions among all the candidates in their respective Assembly constituencies. Similarly, 49 (54%) out of 90 BJP candidates and 51 (57%) out of 88 INLD candidates occupy the top three highest assets positions in their constituencies.
