Thirteen of the 15 MPs re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Kerala had declared growth in their assets ahead of the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

The state has elected eight Congress, four CPM, two Indian Union Muslim League parliamentarians and one MP from the Kerala Congress (M)  for another term in the Lower House.

Most of the MPs registered an over 100 per cent growth in their assets. The only two people re-entering the Lok Sabha and had not declared asset growths are P Karunakaran, the CPM parliamentarian from Kasargod, and K V Thomas, the Congress MP from Ernakulam.

According to figures released by the Kerala Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor registered an eight percent increase in his assets over five years. IUML’s E T Mohammed Basheer, the MP from Ponnani, registered a rise of 2,081 per cent.

Basheer, whose assets stood at over Rs 6 lakh in 2009, declared assets worth over Rs 1.32 crore in 2014. These figures are based on affidavits the MPs filed ahead of the general elections. Tharoor is the richest re-elected MP from the state, with over Rs 23 crore in declared assets, while other MPs have assets ranging from Rs 32 lakh to Rs 2.62 crore.

Among the MPs from the CPM, P Karunakaran, who declared assets of Rs 1.78 crore in 2009, is the only person to record a fall of about 67 per cent in his assets. In 2014, he declared Rs 59 lakh in assets.
