Out of total 4033 MLAs across the country, 4,001 MLAs have assets worth Rs 54,545 crore. Hard to believe, but this is more than the total annual budget of three states namely Nagaland, Mizoram and Sikkim for the year 2023-24.
Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW) have analyzed the data collected from the affidavits filled by MLAs in the last elections. The average assets of an MLA from 84 political parties and independents comes out to Rs 13.63 crore.
According to the report, the total assets of the MLAs of Karnataka are more than the total assets of all the MLAs of 21 other states. Nagaland’s budget for this year is Rs 23,086 crore, Mizoram Rs 14,210 crore and Sikkim Rs 11,807 crore, which makes a total of Rs 49,103 crore.
Tell that the assets of all the MLAs of Karnataka are more than all the MLAs of 21 states. The total assets of the MLAs of Karnataka is Rs 14,359 crore. This amount is more than the combined budget provisions of Mizoram and Sikkim this year.
According to ADR, the MLAs of Karnataka have so much wealth that if all the MLAs of 21 states and union territories put together, it is more than that. States whose total assets of all MLAs are less than that of all MLAs of Karnataka are Rajasthan, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Bengal, Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Kerala , Puducherry, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
The total accumulated capital of all the MLAs of these states and union territories is only Rs 13,976 crore. The average assets of sitting MLAs of the country is Rs 13.63 crore ADR has analyzed the details of the assets of 4,001 sitting MLAs of the country (total 4,033 MLAs).
In this figure, the details of MLAs of 28 states and two union territories of the country have been included. The average assets of a sitting MLA in the country is Rs 13.63 crore. State-wise, MLAs in Karnataka (223) have assets worth Rs 14,359 crore, Maharashtra (284 out of 288) Rs 6,679 crore, Andhra Pradesh (174 out of 175) Rs 4,914 crore.
Whereas, in the largest states Uttar Pradesh (403), MLAs have total assets of Rs 3,255 crore, Gujarat (182) Rs 2,987 crore, Tamil Nadu (224) Rs 2,767 crore and Madhya Pradesh (230) Rs 2,476 crore. In terms of average assets, the MLAs of YSR Congress Party also outnumber the Congress, but the total assets of 59 MLAs from Tripura are only Rs 90 crore, 40 MLAs from Mizoram Rs 190 crore and 60 MLAs from Manipur have total assets of Rs 225 crore.
If we talk about political parties, the average asset of 1356 MLAs of BJP is Rs 11.97 crore, average asset of 719 MLAs of Congress is Rs 21.97 crore and average asset of 227 MLAs of TMC is Rs 3.51 crore, average asset of 161 MLAs of Aam Aadmi Party is Rs 10.20 crore. crore and the average assets of 146 MLAs of YSR Congress Party is Rs 23.14 crore.
On the other hand, in terms of total assets, the total assets of BJP MLAs are Rs 16,234 crore, Congress MLAs Rs 15,798 crore, YSRCP MLAs Rs 3,379 crore, DMK’s 131 MLAs Rs 1,663 crore and Aam Aadmi Party’s Rs 1,663 crore. The total assets of the MLAs are Rs 1,642 crore.
