According to a new data released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch, 306 out of 763 MPs in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have criminal cases. This number is equal to 40 percent of the total number of MPs.

The information regarding the criminal cases of the MPs is based on the affidavits given by the candidates in the Lok Sabha elections held last year. According to this data, 194 MPs have cases related to serious crimes like murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and crime against women. According to the data released by ADR, 73 percent of the MPs who have declared the list of criminal cases are from Kerala.

After that Bihar and Maharashtra have 57 percent while Telangana has 50 percent. Bihar’s MPs are at the forefront of serious crimes. 37 percent of MPs from Uttar Pradesh and 34 percent from Maharashtra are guilty of serious crimes. It was found from the affidavit that 32 MPs were charged with attempted murder (under IPC Section 307) while 4 MPs were also charged with rape (under IPC Section 376).
